The branch led the celebrations in Tewkesbury with an Open Day
at the club and had also arranged with the Army at Ashchurch Camp
for vehicles to be displayed in Halford's Car Park opposite the
market. The site was chosen to ensure that the Army received
high visibility from the public. A special thanks go to
Halford's for their enthusiastic support prior to and on the day,
well done Becky and her team.
The Army displayed three vehicles, a Panther, a Jackal and a
Comms fitted Landrover and this allowed the public to see the
vehicles that pass through Ashchurch on their way to
Afghanistan. Sgt Reece Marsden and his team are to be
commended for the efforts on the day and also for raising £165.52
for the Legion Poppy Appeal.
In the club itself, members had decorated the main
rooms with Armed Forces Day bunting and a banner, several
Standards were on display as well as a number of other display
items showing the work of the Legion. There was also
a selection of DVDs playing in the background showing elements
of the Armed Forces at work.
The ladies (and Mo) had baked cakes and so free tea/coffee and a
slice of cake were the order of the day. There was a steady
stream of people coming in to enjoy the freebies, some even took
cake back to their hotel to show them what a proper home made cake
tastes like!! Once again the generosity of people was evident
in donations to the Poppy Appeal.
The town Mayor Geoff Pope, accompanied by his wife Angie, paid a
formal visit to the club in the afternoon. The RBL
Tewkesbury is one of Mayor Pope's nominated charities and it
was a good opportunity for him to see the Legion at work in the
community. The Army lads came into the Legion at the same
time and it was too good a photo opportunity to miss. Mayor
Pope and Angie were hosted by Branch Chair Pete Minshull and Club
Chair Jean Wiggins, and a good time was had by all.
All in all we had a very good day, the weather was great, the
public enjoyed it, the club prospered and the Legion took another
step in raising its profile in the community. Thank you to
all who helped to make it such a special day and to show that
Tewkesbury has the greatest respect and admiration for the nation's
Armed Forces
