History of Branch.

The Bexleyheath and Welling Branch of the Royal British Legion was formed in 2004, amalgamating the Bexleyheath branch and the East Wickham and Welling branch.  The Standards of the original branches are laid up in Christ Church Bexleyheath.

The new branch is not associated with a RBL Club and its main purpose has been and is fund raising and remembrance events together with promoting the RBL and parading the Branch Standard at appropriate events including funerals when requested.  We are in the process of getting a Branch Community Support representative trained to enable us to contribute to this work.

The membership has slowly risen from about 30 to around 50.  Membership of the RBL does not require previous military service and our membership reflects this.  The diversity of our membership brings with it a range of skills and knowledge helping us to be a successful fundraising group.  The dedication of a hard core of committee members together with some wonderful volunteers allows us to collect considerable amounts of money for the Poppy Appeal throughout the year.

Contrary to popular belief the Poppy Appeal runs all year, not just the fortnight before Remembrance Day.  The Appeal runs from September to September and our efforts and the generosity of the citizens of the London Borough of Bexley have resulted in an annual fund raise of £81,241.17 in the year 2023/24.

There are four RBL branches if the London Borough of Bexley:  Crayford, Thamesmead and Abbey Wood, Sidcup and Footscray & North Cray District.
