In August 1921, Colonel AVH Vaughan-Lee, MVO, accepted the presidency of the Ilminster British Legion Branch, the Comrades of the Great War having become affiliated to this newly formed amalgamated ex-servicemen's organisation with Lieutenant Colonel Hingley as Chairman, Mr LH Mermagen as Vice Chairman, MR HH Wyatt as treasurer and Mr WH Coombes as honorary secretary. In October 1921, Mr Coombes resigned and was replaced by Mr F Hansford. 

The Ilminster Branch was reformed on 31 August 1926. 

In the 4 September 1926 issue of the Chard & Ilminster News under the heading "BRITISH LEGION RE-FORMED", it was reported:

"A number of Ilminster ex-service men met at the United Men's Club rooms on Tuesday for the purpose of re-forming the local branch of the British Legion. The Legion has never really ceased to exist in the town, but for some time past its constitution has been somewhat indefinite. The outcome of the meeting was the restoration of the branch to its official status and the appointment of officers. There was a fair attendance and considerable enthusiasm was manifest. Lt Col J.R. Paull, OBE, presided and also present were Mr Kennedy Hunt, South-west area organiser, Mr Wembridge, county secretary and Mr Frank Hansford, hon. sec. of the local branch of the Legion Relief Fund. Col Paull was elected chairman of the branch and Mr W. H. Coombes, hon. sec. and a committee of three was appointed to assist in the conduct of the branch. This restoration should be of benefit to all ex-service men in the town."
