poppy field

Suffolk

Inspired by the 888,246 poppies at the Tower of London, Hartismere pupils and staff have come together to make 100 ceramic poppies to mark the centenary of the end of WW1. Unlike the London poppies we didn't follow a set template so no two poppies are exactly alike, making them quite unique and personal.

Yesterday morning, Afghanistan Veteran and double amputee, Duncan Slater came in and gave inspirational talks to 500 of our pupils. Mr Slater, a local resident, is well-known for taking part in the ITV show last year: Harry's South Pole Heroes, where he, Prince Harry and other injured servicemen and women made a 200-mile trek to the South Pole to raise money for the charity Walking With The Wounded, which helps rehabilitate wounded soldiers and get them back into the workplace.

Following these talks with the children, Mr Slater then helped to complete the school display by laying the 100th poppy just before the two minute silence at 11 a.m. Each individual poppy will be dedicated to a soldier from Eye and the local area who died in the first world war and sold to raise money for Mr Slater's charity Walking With The Wounded as well as The Royal British Legion. Members of the public are welcome to contact the school if they would like to purchase one of these poppies.
