Poppy Appeal Lauch 2024

Images from the event

Saturday 19th October 2024 saw this year's official launch of the Poppy Appeal for Spain District North Royal British Legion branches.

The launch event, held at Benidorm's Rincón de Loix commenced with a short parade of Spain District North Branches Standards, VIPs and RBL members.

The parade, led by The Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, started at Calle Castelló, going along Avenida de Madrid and finishing at Rincón de Loix.

A short ceremony then followed in front of Spain District North VIP guests and was led by Father Richard Seabrook SSC, the District Padre who provided a Blessing as part of the Act of Remembrance.

Mark Benton, District Bugler, played the Last Post and Reveille, signifying the start and end of the two minute silence.

Nick Keen Vice Chairman of Spain District North, welcomed everyone and gave a rendition of the poem "They Grow Not Old" by Harry Fellows, who had seen action and wounded during WW1.

Paul Kane, Chairman of Spain District North then gave a speech saying "How the Poppy symbolises the Armed Forces sacrifices and their commitment to peace, and the Act of Remembrance for over 100 years". He then went on to say "that over 100,000 € is raised and spent annually within the region" and gave thanks to all who support and maintain the Royal British Legion in Spain. A Special mention was made to the the Community Support and Welfare team who give their time freely to support the Beneficiaries. On conclusion of his speech Paul gave thanks to The Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, Parade Marshall Dave Brettle, The Standard Bearers and The Phoenix Band.

Anny Read OBE, Royal British Legion Trustee, then gave a short speech about the work of the Royal British Legion and also her involvement with the National Memorial Arboretum. Giving thanks to those who have served and who continue to serve with the Armed Forces. Recognising those who recently assisted with the Covid Pandemic. Anny then went on to say that 39 Beneficiaries had received assistance in the period 2023/24 and that Spain was the biggest country outside of United Kingdom for Royal British Legion Beneficiaries.

Captain Steve McGlory RN, Defence Attaché Madrid, said "that this would be his final Poppy Appeal Launch" as his time as Defence Attaché was coming to an end and that he would be retiring from the Royal Navy. He mentioned that he was now spending time catching up with friends and colleagues and when telling them he would be spending a weekend in Benidorm. Their reply was "if the Royal British Legion organises weekends in Benidorm, Where do I join".
Interestingly Captain McGlory mentioned that during the Second World War, over 1000 Spanish personnel were involved in the fighting for the Allies in the European and North African campaigns.

Major Cameron Law said "it was and honour to be in Benidorm and to give his time to speak about `Rememberance` and what it means during this important time to be able to pause, reflect and remember about those who sacrificed everything" and "how the Poppy Appeal is still as relevant now in providing a connection from the past to today".

Deputy Mayor of Benidorm, Juan Diaz, said "every year hundreds of thousands of people around the world come together to remember those who serve and give their lives for democracy today". And "how the wearing of the Poppy on your lapel honours your forces". He also mentioned "it was an honour that the Royal British Legion chooses Benidorm to celebrate the Poppy Appeal Launch".

The Chairman Paul Kane then recited 'The Kohima', which was followed by the playing by The Phoenix Band of the National Anthems of Spain and the United Kingdom. A march past of all the Standards concluded the ceremony.

Originally from Altiplano Branch Facebook site.

A request for information about Harold Frederick Bates from Josephine Korsten in Nederweert, Holland.

"In Nederweert we have a WW2 cemetery with 363 British soldiers. We would like to give these soldiers a face. I am searching for relatives of Harold Frederick Bates, serv.nr.14726262, trooper of Royal Scotch Greys. Born in West Ham and he died 20-12-1944 in Holland. He was a son of Thomas Arthur and Elisabeth Jessie Bates of Leyton, Essex. One brother Charles Henry, married Gladys Kathleen Bar. Perhaps they have children. Can you get me in touch with relatives or do you have a photo of Harold Frederick Bates or can you share this message with other facebook groups in London ? that would be great. Kind regards".
