Northern Ireland Unites to Honour Service at Armed Forces Day 2025
Newtownards, Northern Ireland – 21 June 2025 – Thousands gathered today at Newtownards Airfield to mark Armed Forces Day 2025, a national celebration honouring the dedication and sacrifice of the UK’s Armed Forces. Hosted by Ards and North Down Borough Council, the event brought together serving personnel, veterans, cadets, and the wider community in a powerful display of unity and gratitude.
The day commenced with a military parade through Newtownards town centre, led by the Band, Bugles, Pipes and Drums of the Royal Irish Regiment, followed by a moving Drumhead Service and Flag Raising Ceremony at the airfield. These ceremonial moments paid tribute to the courage and commitment of those who serve in the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force.
Local branches of the Royal British Legion, including representatives from all the surrounding areas, played a central role in the day’s proceedings. Their continued support for veterans and their families was evident throughout the event, reinforcing the enduring bond between the Armed Forces and the communities they serve.
Highlights of the day included:
- Aerial displays by the Red Arrows, the RAF Falcons parachute team, and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s C47 Dakota.

- A ceremonial Beating Retreat to close the day with dignity and celebration.
