St James's Branch Jeffrey Long does it again

Parachute Regiment veteran Jeffrey Long has raised £3,000 after finishing the walk in aid of two charities. The fundraising theme of 190 miles represents 100 miles walked to raise funds for the Royal British Legion, as they celebrate the centenary of their formation on Saturday, May 15. The other 90 miles represents his 90 years of life (he celebrates his 90th birthday in October this year) – this money will go to support the Parachute Regt.

The former paratrooper from Bingley has single-handedly raised more than £300,000 for charity over the past 14 years and attracted celebrity endorsement along the way. Mr Long said: “It feels great to finish the walk. “It was the toughest walk I have ever done, as I was suffering with my back and ankle while I was doing it. “I had toots from car drivers and words of encouragement from people while I did it. “It was great to see the Lord Mayor. We get on like a house on fire. It was a great welcome from her.

“When I get older I will stop the walks, but I still feel about 35.

Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Doreen Lee, said: “It is a pleasure to greet Jeffrey on his return from his walk. “He has managed to combine his love of walking and keeping active with raising money for some great causes. “It is also our chance to celebrate 100 years of support for the Royal British Legion and, most importantly, 100 years of support to those who have served with the nation’s Armed Forces.”
