RBL Isle of Wight County Poppy Launch 2015
The Isle of Wight Royal British Legion County 2015 Poppy launch took place on Saturday 26th October, in St.Thomas Square, Newport. In the run up to the service, the poppies were ferried up the river Medina to Newport Quay, where they were placed on the Field Gun. The parade was lead by the Vectis Corp of Drums & the Standard Bearers up Quay Street to St.Thomas Square.
There was a welcoming address by the RBL County President, Cllr Ian Ward who spoke about a recent visit to France and his visit to some of the sites of WWI.
The gathered crowd was then addressed by HM Lord-Lieutenant, Maj Gen Martin White, who spoke about Galiipoli and the Isle of Wight Riffles.
The serivice was led by Rev. Roger Whatley, RBL County Chaplin. Prayers were led by Rev. K Arkell, Vicar of Newport.
After the service there was a march past where local veterans joined in and the Salute was taken by the Lord-Lieutenant in the High Street.
The Field Gun was returned to St. Thomas Square so photographs could be taken. and a music display by the Vectis Corp of Drums entertained the crowd.
