Marching Forward: How Young People Can Join the Royal British Legion as Youth Members

The Royal British Legion (RBL) continues to honour tradition while embracing the future through its Youth Membership Programme, designed for young people aged 12 to 17 who actively participate as Youth Standard Bearers or Youth Musicians in RBL-licensed bands.

What Is Youth Membership?

Youth membership is free of charge and open to those involved in ceremonial roles or musical contributions within the Legion. It offers young people a chance to engage with the RBL community, learn discipline, teamwork, and take part in meaningful commemorative events across the UK.

Membership lasts until the young person turns 18, with annual updates requested to keep records current.

Who Can Apply?

Only a parent or legal guardian can register a young person for membership. Applicants must be:

  • Between 12 and 17 years old
  • Actively participating in Youth Standard Bearing or
  • A member of an RBL-licensed Band

Application Process

The application form is divided into several key sections:

Section A – Parent or Guardian Details

This section collects contact and identity information from the adult responsible for the youth applicant.

Section B – Youth Details

Applicants must indicate whether they are joining as a Youth Standard Bearer or a Youth Musician, and provide their personal details including date of birth and gender.

Section C – Band or Parade Marshal Declaration

A representative—such as a Band Master, Parade Marshal, or Director of Music—must confirm the youth’s active participation in either standard bearing or band membership.

Section D – Fitness to Participate (Standard Bearers Only)

This section outlines the physical demands of standard bearing, including carrying an 8ft standard weighing up to 3.5kg in various weather conditions. Parents must confirm the youth’s fitness and disclose any relevant health conditions or disability-related benefits that may be affected.

Section D – Formal Declaration

The parent or guardian must sign to confirm the accuracy of the information, the youth’s active participation, and their responsibility during RBL events.

Section G – Privacy Notice

The RBL assures applicants that personal data is handled securely.

Why Join?

Youth members play a vital role in the ceremonial life of the Legion, representing the next generation of remembrance and service. Whether carrying the standard at parades or performing in a band, these young people embody the values of respect, duty, and community.
