The Armed Forces Covenant is a national promise that ensures members of the Armed Forces community — whether serving, reservists, veterans, or families — are treated fairly and with respect. It reflects the UK’s commitment to recognising the sacrifices made by those who defend the nation.
What is the Armed Forces Covenant?
The Covenant is a pledge by the government, businesses, charities, and communities to ensure that no one who serves or has served in the Armed Forces faces disadvantage compared to other citizens. In some cases, special consideration is appropriate, particularly for those who have given the most, such as the injured or bereaved.
It is not just a statement of support — it is a practical framework that encourages organisations to take meaningful action.

Who the Covenant Supports
The Covenant covers the entire Armed Forces community, including:
- Regular personnel
- Reservists
- Service families
- Veterans and Service leavers
- Bereaved families
- Cadet Forces (in certain contexts)
Each group may face unique challenges, and the Covenant aims to ensure fair access to services, opportunities, and support.

How Organisations Show Their Support
Thousands of organisations across the UK have pledged to uphold the Covenant. Their commitments often include:
- Fair recruitment practices for veterans and reservists
- Flexible leave for Service spouses and partners
- Discounts or benefits for Armed Forces families
- Support for employees mobilised as reservists
- Community initiatives that recognise military service
Businesses, charities, local authorities, and public bodies can all sign the Covenant and tailor their pledges to their capabilities.
