The Dedworth Branch was formed in
1968, largely because it was felt that the Windsor Branch was too
remote from the west end of the town. Original leading lights in
the formation of the branch were, Harry Wright, Brian Lyons and
Harry Hastings. It was in this year that The Royal British Legion
Shooting Club was formed by Brian Lyons. Sadly it closed May 2004
due to the lack of membership.
It was Harry Hastings in particular
who raised the profile of the local Poppy Appeal, ably assisted by
his wife Pam, her father in law Sid Harris and Alf Allcot
manager of the local Wolf Public House, venue for the Branch
meetings. The commitment of these early members was
exceptional.
The Old Windsor Branch was formed in
1935, but it too suffered declining membership and in May 1980 it
officially merged with Dedworth.
The Windsor Branch was formed in
November 1921. Sadly membership declined over the years and in
November 1999 it officially merged with the Dedworth and Old
Windsor Branch.
It is with great sadness that I have
to announce that the Womens Section of The Royal British Legion,
which was the oldest one has closed. They tried everything but to
no avail!
