Redcar

Branch members and Standards were on parade, along with the Mayor of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Councillor Dennis Teasdale, and members of the public to pay their respects at the Birger anchor on the Esplanade.

The anchor was recovered from the seabed in 1998 and later placed on display. The barque Birger was a Norwegian ship wrecked on Saltscar rocks in October 1898. The wreck was a tragedy with only two survivors and ultimately destroyed Coathams Victoria Pier beyond repair. The anchor is dedicated to all merchant seamen.
