Portishead War Memorials

The main WW1 and WW2 memorials are located inside the church of St Peters, but the church does have extended opening times. If it is difficult to visit the church, then detailed and expanded information can be found on the Portishead Town Council (PTC) website, along with details of other memorials in the town.

The link below will take you to the PTC website AND a printed Book of Remembrance is available in the Portishead Library. Having Remembrance Memorials in digital format does give the opportunity to add 'post WW2' and future service personnel to be remembered in the same place for all to find AND the opportunity to add extra detail to an individuals record eg Photo. To add, or amend, detail will have to be done by contacting Portishead Town Council directly.

Pictures of the Portishead War Memorials will be found on the Portishead Town Council website.(link below)

New Memorial Stone

A new Memorial Stone was installed at the junction of Albert Road/Brampton Way and the High Street on May 8th 2025 to coincide with the VE 80 celebrations. The installation was carried out jointly by Portishead RBL and Portishead in Bloom. The stone was blessed by RBL Chaplain, Rev Rob Eastwood-Dewing in the presence of the congregation following the VE 80 service in St Peter’s church on 10th May. The congregation included our local MP, Sadik Al-Hassan, representatives of North Somerset Council and Somerset RBL and branches,  Portishead Town Council - Chairman, Roger Whitfield, Vice-Chairman, Mike Johnson. Cadets from local Army, Airforce and Navy making some 170 persons in total. We were honoured by WW2 veterans, Arthur Oborne and Raymond Booth both 101 years old and Pamela Wright 103-year-old Bristol Blitz Firefighter. Arthur from Portishead laid the first poppy wreath at the Memorial Stone.  The stone is Portishead’s only external memorial that is on the route of the November Remembrance Day parade. As well as being a gathering point it serves to inform the public about the Book of Remembrance to be found digitally on PTC’s website and physically in the library.
