The village lies about eight miles north-east of Shrewsbury. The Manor House by the church has a Jacobean arcade of four arches. The village also has six almhouses founded by Lord Bradford in 1694. The great church tower, begun by the Normans and finished in the middle of the 15th century, has on it the mark of a cannon ball fired in the Civil War, reminding us that here was the last Royalist garrison in Shropshire to fall to Cromwell's men.
High Ercall Branch was first established in 1953.
