Hedon & District Branch History

A brief History of Hedon and District Branch of the Royal British Legion

The club is in part of a former Baptist Chapel "Built by Subscription" in 1801 and that part is a Grade 2 listed building,

1 July 1921 British Legion National body formed
8 March 1933 Hedon & District Branch formed.
1935 First Branch Standard Dedicated.
1935 First Branch Headquarters at 8 Magdalen Gate - currently "Nippers Play School"
22 September 1937 Woman's Section formed.
1938 Baptist Chapel, 4 Magdalen Gate, Hedon, rented by Branch and used as HQ - jointly shared by United Services Club.
1941-1945 Branch assist in running of United Services Club.

1 December 1945

Branch takes over United Services Club.
1948 Woman's Section enters into a 20 year lease on their HQ.
1949 A 25 year lease signed for use of Baptist Chapel by Branch and Bar extension Club alterations completed.
4 June 1950 Dedication of 1939-1945 Roll of Honour on the Hedon War Memorial.
1954 Extensions to provide upstairs room and Bar facilities carried out.
1968 Branch purchase Baptist Chapel.
1968 Woman's Section lease runs out - accommodated in HQ.
1970 Branch purchase cottage and out-buildings at 2a Magdalen Gate.
23 May 1971 Royal Prefix granted to all British Legion formations.
1974 Following demolition of cottage and out-buildings, new Concert Room built and attached to existing development forming a fully integrated social club.
24 October 1976 Old Standard laid up & new Standard Dedicated.

1984

The Hedon & District British Legion Club Ltd incorporates "Royal" in its title & re-registers with Friendly Societies.

1996 All RBL Branches come under one charity number.

Hedon & District Branch is 75 years old.

8 March 2013

Hedon & District Branch is 80 years old.

8 March 2018

Hedon & District Branch is 85 years old.

April 2018

New Standard and Union flag purchased,awaiting dedication.

24 June 2018 New Standard dedicated by Rev Gordon Smethurst at St. Augustines Church , Hedon.
