Somme 100

As part of the nation’s Remembrance of the Battle of the Somme 1916, the Branch invited residents to take part in its commemoration.  Candle-lit vigils were held at:

  • The War Memorial, Gurkha Square, Fleet, Thursday 30th June
  • The War Memorial, Gally Hill Road, Church Crookham, Friday 1st July

The First Day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July, was chosen as one of the main dates for national commemoration of the First World War.  On this day in 1916, there were 57,470 British casualties including 19,240 dead.  This is the greatest loss ever to the British Army in a single day.  The total casualties in the Battle were 500,000 Germans, 419,654 British and 204,253 French.
