These steps lead to the main road across the Eden Bridge.   There is no wheelchair access from this direction.

This garden was opened in 1933 as an extension to the representation of Rickerby Park as a War Memorial for the counties of Westmorland and Cumberland.   It became the pedestrian entrance to the park from the main road and Eden Bridge.

When a row of houses, Eden Terrace, was demolished to enable the bridge to be widened the City Council sponsored a scheme to provide work for the many local unemployed affected by the Great Depression.   They built the garden from the rubble from the houses.

The garden was designed by Mr Prentice Mawson, the son of a nationally recognised architect, and offered to the people of Carlisle as a Haven of Peace.

It is variously described as the Chinese Gardens, or the Japanese gardens - possibly because of the topiary there.

However it is more correctly the Eden Bridge Memorial Garden.
