2025 Wing Commander Guy Gibson Memorial Plaque in Porthleven
On the morning 19th September 2025 representatives from RAF St Mawgan joined Royal Navy personnel from RNAS Culdrose, local veterans, members of the Old Cornwall Society, church representatives and residents from Porthleven to remember Dambusters hero Wing Commander Guy Gibson.
Following a procession along the harbour, a short service was held beside the memorial plaque at the base of the clock tower of Porthleven’s Bickford Smith Institute Building. Leading the service was Reverend Mike North alongside organiser Beatrice Kerno of the Porthleven Old Cornwall Society.
Wing Commander Gibson’s mother came from Porthleven, and he spent time there during leave. He was killed in action on the 19th September 1944 over Steenbergen, Netherlands at the age of 26.
He was the first Commanding Officer of the famous 617 Squadron, a name that lives on in the RAF after being reformed to become the first squadron to fly the
F-35B Lightning II at RAF Marham.
