Ploemeur Ceremony


On 4th February a ceremony was held at Ploemeur as a tribute to the crew of the Wellington ZL-X who fell in Ploemeur on February 4, 1943, just 80 years ago. The Branch were invited to attend the ceremony and were represented by Christine Daniel, Vice Chair and Colin Daniel, Standard Bearer. The ceremony was presided over by the commander of the NAS Lann-Bihoué in the presence of Group Captain Anthony McCord the Air Attaché at the British Embassy in Paris, the daughter and grandson of Flying Officer AJB Thompson, the sole survivor of the crash, the Mayor of Lorient, the Mayor of Ploemeur and many representatives of the patriotic associations of Ploemeur.


After the raising of the British and French flags to the sound of God Save the King a reminder of historical facts were recited and the civil and military authorities made speeches. After a moment of meditation in front of the Memorial, wreathes were laid by UNC, the Air Attaché and the Branch Vice Chair Christine Daniel.
