PRESS RELEASETOP ROTARY INTERNATIONAL AWARD FOR POPPY COUPLE
The Paul Harris Fellowship Award is one of the highest honours Rotary can bestow upon a person. Recipients are Rotarians and community professionals, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the community, exemplifying the highest ideal in Rotary in placing “SERVICE ABOVE SELF.”
The Rotary Club of Carlisle South has identified Mr and Mrs Wadsworth of Carlisle to receive Rotary Internationals highest award for their work raising funds for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
In 2006, the two Royal British Legion Branches in Carlisle amalgamated to form the Carlisle and Stanwix Branch. Records show that in the year prior to that amalgamation, the 2 former Branches collectively raised about £38,000 for the annual Poppy Appeal in the Carlisle area.
On formation of the new branch, Mr Colin Wadsworth was elected as the Poppy Appeal Organiser for the newly formed Branch. It is a matter of fact that Colin took on the logistical aspects of the Poppy Appeal and Margaret Wadsworth took on the administration.
Supported by Legion Members and many volunteers, including members of local Rotary Clubs the Poppy Appeal annual total increased year on year, £38,000 to nearly £56,000 in the first year until in the Poppy Appeal year ending 30th September 2018, the total has exceeded £106,000 resulting in the total over 12 years reaching £922,296.
For their dedication and hard work in raising close on £1 Million for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, Mr and Mrs Wadsworth were are both awarded Paul Harris Fellowships on 24th April 2018 at the end of a presentation about the Poppy Appeal given by the RBL Community Fundraiser for Cumbria and Isle of Man, Judith Reay.
In presenting the awards, Tony Parrini, President of the Rotary Club of Carlisle South and Secretary of the RBL Carlisle and Stanwix Branch, said that Mr and Mrs Wadsworth were an example to everyone by their organising skills and involvement behind the scenes throughout the year, ensuring that everything is in place, not only for the main Appeal but to meet regular requests for materials when required
