The Royal British Legion is the national custodian of Remembrance

Remembrance Sunday is the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. In 2024 it falls on Sunday 10th November, with Armistice Day on Monday 11th November.

The Armistice, an agreement to end the fighting of the First World War as a prelude to peace negotiations, began at 11am on 11 November 1918. To this day we mark Armistice Day around the United Kingdom with a Two Minute Silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month.

This year marks the 80th anniversaries of momentous battles and turning points of the Second World War.

The D-Day landings of 6th June – the largest seaborne invasion in history – marked the beginning of the liberation of western Europe. RBL Sherborne will be manning a stall at the Conduit, Cheap Street, on that day. There will be information about D-Day and displays from local schools.  There will also be a short ceremony, and wreath laying, at 11:00am which will take place at the War Memorial, Half Moon Street.

Elsewhere on the globe exceptionally hard-fought battles were also turning the tide of the war. The Battle of Monte Cassino was the bloodiest of the Italian Campaign and in India Outnumbered British and Indian forces withstood weeks of siege and brutal fighting at the Battles of Kohima and Imphal.

The Royal British Legion will mark the service and sacrifice of the armed forces in these and other battles with local events organised by its branches.
