The Royal British Legion is recognised as the national custodian of Remembrance.

Remembrance Sunday, the second Sunday in November, is the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today.

A short service will be held at the War Memorial at 1345hrs on Sunday 10th November 2024 before a Parade along the High Street to Tattersall’s.

The  annual Service of Remembrance will be held at Messrs. Tattersall’s Sales Ring at 2.45p.m. following the laying of wreaths at the War Memorial and a parade along the High Street to the Tattersall’s Sales Ring, led by the Parade Marshalls from the Newmarket Branch RBL.

It is not however just about those who serve in the Military Services in isolation, but also about playing your part, changing perceptions and recognising other different types of service.
We should also pause, reflect and give thanks for those who serve to treat us, keep us safe and those who protect us. Different emotions, thoughts and memories can be stirred during this particular process.
This is particularly pertinent today more than ever when we think about the past couple of years, with the COVID-19 pandemic when we think about the NHS, the Carers and key workers who played their part during the pandemic putting themselves at risk to help and support others. We think about those lost during the pandemic, but also those affected by this loss and those suffering long term effects. We think about those affected by the war in Ukraine, with the loss of life, injuries, destruction and those displaced from their homes.
We should ensure that the act of Remembrance is embraced, understood and passed on for future generations but it can be at anytime of the year, not just when we come together for armistice. The local Branch of the RBL acts as a focal point for social activity and support. We have set a good foundation this year, membership is growing and we are moving forward in our support and affiliation with the Youth Service Organisations in the Town. Breakfast Club is very popular and welcomes our Membership, serving Military personnel, veterans and the Emergency Services. We have shown great support for the Poppy Appeal and continue to grow and develop links in the local Community. We are pleased to be working in conjunction with Newmarket Town Council for the Annual Remembrance Parade and Service this year.

It is hoped this year we will have a contingent from the NHS to represent and remember those who have lost their lives during War and in peacetime. We feel that it’s important this year in particular due to the lives lost during the COVID pandemic and for the NHS staff that were on the frontline.
