The War Grave and Memorial Photographic Project

The original objective of the War Grave and Memorial Photographic Project (WGPP) was to photograph every war grave, individual memorial, Ministry of Defence grave, and family memorial of serving military personnel from WWI to the present day. However, due to its popularity it's remit has now been extended to cover all nationalities and military conflicts and make these available within a searchable database which can be accessed via their Website.

Local War Graves

There are a total of 80 War Graves in the Morecambe and Heysham area and details of the casualties names, regiment, unit, date of death etc have been extracted from the CWGC Website and can be viewed via the links below:

  1. St. Peter's Churchyard, Heysham (11 casualties);
  2. Hale Carr Cemetery, Heysham (6 casualties);
  3. Holy Trinity Churchyard, Poulton, Morecambe (4 casualties);
  4. Torrisholme Cemetery, Morecambe (59 casualties).

During Remembrancetide each year, the Morecambe & Heysham Branch arrange for a Commemorative Cross to be placed on each of these War Graves as a token of thanks for the ultimate sacrifice each of these casualities has made.

The Morecambe & Heysham Branch has liaised with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission during 2017 to arrange for three of the War Grave headstones in St Peter's Churchyard to be replaced, as the originals had suffered from weathering which, in one case, had made the inscription illegible. The damage to these headstones can be seen here and the new headstones can be viewed here.
