June 6th 2024 marks the 80th Anniversary of D Day.

To mark this occasion Hondón Valley RBL and The Hondón Hub invite you to our 80th Commemoration event.

The meal will be buffet style

Entertainment will be provided by the marvellous Katy Dann.

A great lunch and afternoon.  We filled Restaurante Veintiocho in Hondon de los Frailes.  Our thanks goes to all the members and friends who supported us, as well as Simone and all her staff.  They really looked after us so well.

Members enjoyed a St Patrick's Competition as well as Irish music and of course our well supported raffle.

Entertainment by DIVAS

Following the formal part of the AGM, local theatre group DIVAS entertained us with a funny sketch (from Anna, Pam and Marilyn) as well as poems from Chris and Pam and Singing from Joe, Greetje, Anna and Pam.  A fun evening andhere are a few photos.

                  

Golf Day 6th November

Over seventy golfers from Alicante province got together for the fourth time at Font Del Llop Golf Resort on Tuesday 7^th November to raise money for the Royal British Legion 2023 Poppy Appeal.

The event was the brainchild of ex Royal Navy Signalman, John Wilkinson. He recruited Ron Graham, an ex-Royal Air Force Helicopter Crewman and member of the RBL Hondón Valley Branch and golfing friends from Font Del Llop to help organise the day.

John had managed to acquire one of the original ceramic poppies that formed the stunning ‘Seas of Red’, a display of 8000 poppies that adorned the moat at the Tower of London in 2014. This ceramic poppy was mounted on a polished wooden plinth to make a unique, elegant trophy presented annually to the winner whose name is engraved on the trophy for prosperity.    
    
This year over 1,300€ was raised for the Poppy Appeal.  This fantastic amount raised in one day is testament to the golfers, who contribute €10 each which goes straight to the RBL Poppy Appeal and the very generous support of local businesses and individuals who kindly sponsor the many prizes that can be won on the day.

Joe Logan, Branch Chairman, thanked all those present for once again supporting the Poppy Appeal and their generous contributions. He explained how the money would be used here in Spain and then presented the Ceramic Poppy to this year’s winner Danny Wright.

Remembrance Service 11th November

Once again the little church in Hondón de los Frailes was the location for the annual Hondón Valley Branch Remembrance Service. We were fortunate this year in that Father Rodney Middleton was again able to officiate, assisted by Father Robin Pettitt.  We were also delighted to have local Priest Father Godfrey assisting and reading the lesson. We welcomed Victor Ramirez Segura from the Hondón de los Frailes Ayuntamiento together with a representative from the Diputación de Alicante and Elizabeth Bell, MBE, Vice Consul from the British Consulate in Alicante.  

Father Rodney gave an interesting, personal address recalling his early years.  Poignant poems were read by the Branch Chairman Joe Logan and Marc Meuris, formally with the Belgian Air Force. 

Following the Service, the congregation followed the Branch Standard, the Union and Spanish Flags to the Ayuntamiento Garden where wreaths and small wooden crosses were laid.  Father Rodney then read a final prayer.

Poppy Ball - Roca, Aspe.

Our annual Poppy Ball took place at Restaurante Roca in Aspe on Friday 27th October.  The room and tables were beautifully decorated for the event. Over 90 members and guests enjoyed a delicious meal being serenaded by singers Andy Winwood and Greetje Mulder-Kok. Gez acted as DJ for the evening.  We thank all those who helped make the evening such a success.  Once again our aim was to raise money for the Poppy Appeal and thanks to all those who generously donated such great prizes, I can reveal we raised 750€ from the event.

The Annual Remembrance Service will take place on Saturday 11th November.  Please come and join us.  Lunch is available at Restaurante Veintiocho and booking is essential due to limited places available.

This was the 17th Anniversary of the Branch and we enjoyed a delicious cake made by Katie.  Above we have Nathalie and Joe Logan, Branch Chairman, cutting the cake.

We were delighted to welcome Nathalie from the Valencian Government.  She gave us a very informative presentation on possible grants for home improvements in the Hondón de los Frailes area.

4. Grants for the rehabilitation of buildings and housing in the framework of the European Next Generation funds.

This will be a great opportunity to see what is available if you are considering making any improvements to your property shortly.  Please bring any friends with you.  (However, if this date is not convenient, it might be that another presentation will be available in the area at a later date)

 Carnival time in Hondon de los Frailes - -August

It’s Fiestas in Hondón de los Frailes and last Saturday the streets of this little village were ringing to the sounds, not only of the several Spanish bands in the parade but also the floats with their own (very loud and different) dance music.

It is a great time to celebrate and a number of Branch members joined friends in DIVAS – the local amateur drama group – and were right there for the 4^th year running with their float, Dick Whittington welcomed to London by the King and Queen.

The parade was enjoyed by an enthusiastic crowd of all nationalities, the final act being the fantastic display of drumming. The celebrations continued well into the early hours.

A great night, albeit energetic and a number of the Branch are looking forward to taking part in the DIVAS Pantomime in the New Year.

 Branch Summer Party - 18th July

We would like to thank all those members, friends and guests who attended our Branch Summer Party at Restaurante el Fielato, near Abanilla on Tuesday.  It was a great opportunity to meet up with friends we may not have seen for a while in such a lovely setting.

Our thanks also goes to the Restaurante staff who looked after us so well and kept the food and wine coming.  We appreciate the help from local businesses who donated some of the prizes for the event. 

Although a very hot day we welcomed 70 members, friends and guests. The Committee had arranged petanque (under the trees!) and also the "Hondon Valley Branch Human Fruit Machine" - all great fun. We had a "bumper" raffle and the day raised funds for the Poppy Appeal.  At the end of the event, we welcomed at least six new members.

Diners were serenaded by singer David Sooper.

We are making final arrangements for our Annual Poppy Ball to be held at Restaurante Roca, Aspe on Friday 27^th October. A poster and full details will be available shortly.

Hondón Valley Branch Members “Tread the Boards”

A number of members of the Hondón Valley Branch took part in a recent comedy play Out of Focus.  DIVAS (Drama in the Valley) is a local theatre group they are now planning a Pantomime (Oh yes they are!).

Branch Secretary, Pam, played the hapless and very disorganised Vicar’s wife and the play revolved around her treble booking the Village Hall and the chaos that ensued.  Other Legion members and supporters included, Branch Vice Chairman, Chris, Anna, Marilyn, Steve and Greetje, with others involved back stage and front of house.  The oldest member of the cast was Len, who at the age of 94, plays the newspaper boy!

We are now looking forward, along with DIVAS, to taking part in the local Carnival in Hondón de los Frailes in late August as part of the village Fiestas.

CORONATION LUNCH - 8TH MAY 2023

Once again the streets of Hondón de los Frailes resounded to the stirring sound of the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums as they marched, following the Standards of the Hondón Valley Branch of the RBL which were themselves preceded by the District North Standard paraded by their Standard Bearer, Mary Lou Kemp.

They arrived at Tipsy Terrace where they were welcomed by the Chairman of the Branch, Joe Logan and a large number of guests.  Following a welcome speech by the Chairman, the guests, who included the Mayor of Frailes, Sr. Eleuterio Jover, the Town Hall Foreigners’ Liaison Officer,  Victor Ramirez Segura and the District North Spain Chairman, Jack Kemp were treated to a musical interlude provided by the Pipes and Drums plus a stirring display of sword dancing.

All the guests then enjoyed a meal of Coronation Chicken (of course) and other menu delights all provided with style by Jo, Steve and their excellent staff at Tipsy Terrace. The President, Lt. Col. Peter Lodge MBE proposed the Loyal Toast to King Charles III.

Following lunch guests were entertained by Bella Luna and DJ Gez, both of whom provided great music for dancing.  A bumper raffle had been arranged and one lucky member went away with an air fryer.

On display was poppy artwork from Newton College, Elche, who have supported the Branch for a number of years.

Robbie Burns’ is Remembered in the Hondón Valley

The Hondón Valley Branch started what is to be a very busy year, with a very successful Burns’ Night Supper.  40 members and guests arrived at the Scottish themed and decorated Restaurante Veintiocho, Hondón de los Frailes on 25^th January.  Piper Tony Dolphin did us proud and got us all in the Scottish spirit.

Branch Chairman, Joe Logan recounted the life of Scotland’s National Poet – Robert Burns and we then celebrated in a way Burns would have approved – eating, drinking, music, piping (and of course, the craic!) The haggis, piped in by Tony, was toasted with a “ wee dram “ of whiskey, before tucking into a hearty bowl of Scotch broth , followed by Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, then steak pie, topping off the meal with Whiskey Trifle and coffee. A number of members took part reading poems and the “Toast to the Lassies” by Joe Logan and “Response” by Branch Secretary Pam, were particularly entertaining. Pam recalled what ladies “expected” from their man, but then reminded us of the “reality”!

After the various toasts we all linked arms for Auld Lang Syne. A really enjoyable and memorable evening.

The AGM of the Hondón Valley Branch was held on 15^th November.  The Chairman, Joe Logan welcomed members and guests and gave a very comprehensive report on the past year’s events.  He thanked all those who had helped to make it such a successful year for the Branch and then went on to report on planned events for next year.

Following the formal part of the meeting members were entertained by fellow Legion members and supporters from the local drama group (DIVAs)  There was much hilarity when two members read Pam Ayres poems, one donning an expanding Scotsman’s costume.  The various songs and readings showed the versatility and talent of the group.  The evening ended with Greetje singing “Big Spender” much to the delight and applause from the audience.  So much so, that there were questions as to next year’s entertainment!

Golf Day in aid of the Poppy AppeaL

The Hondón Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion were delighted when member Ron Graham suggested he, together with John Wilkinson, would arrange a Golf Day in aid of the Poppy Appeal for the third year running. Ron is Vice President of The Hondón Valley Golf Society.

On 8th November – a beautiful warm November Day – 68 golfers and members gathered at Font Del Llop Golf Club near Monforte del Cid in Alicante Province.  Branch Members Neil, his wife Lucy along with Barbara, set up a tremendous stall with a tombola, leaflets about the Branch and Legion and other memorabilia. There were also delicious savouries from Lucy and Barbara.

Ron said "As Vice President of the HVGS I am delighted that our efforts brought local golfers and the RBL together to make such a huge difference to the Poppy Appeal funds in such trying times. It would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors." 

This year, the overall winner was Jamie Smith, an ex Army Air Corps Warrant Officer who scored 41 points. He was presented with a beautifully mounted poppy, one of those displayed at the Tower of London in 2014. 

Neil said “We are indebted to Ron and his fellow golfers for an occasion to meet in such superb surroundings.  It was a great opportunity to chat and talk about the Legion’s work here in Spain and at the same time raise money for the Poppy Appeal.  We thank everyone who supported us on the day. It was a great success and raised in excess of 1,145.00€ for the Poppy Appeal – an increase from last year.  We are extremely grateful to all concerned today.”

Although the stormy weather was “not ideal”, for the wreath laying the rain had reduced to drizzle.  The members and guests then enjoyed a lunch at Restaurante Veintiocho.

POPPY BALL - OCTOBER 2022

The Branch held their Poppy Ball at Restaurante Roca in Aspe at the end of October.  Guests arrived to find the dining room and large courtyard decorated with poppy items and this set the scene for a great evening. Joe Logan, the Branch Chairmen welcomed members and guests.  Following the meal, which contained five delicious starters to share, guests were entertained by Gabriella and then Jim Muir gave renditions of popular songs.  Guests enjoyed dancing to the music and then came the Grand Poppy Draw with over 30 superb prizes – donated by members and local businesses.  At the end of the evening we were asked when the Poppy Ball would be held in 2023!  Our thanks to everyone who made the night such a success, especially those who generously donated prizes.

Sadness and Joy at Hondón Valley RBL

The September Branch meeting was full of mixed emotions.  The death of our Patron Queen Elizabeth II was marked with a prayer, minute silence and memories of her 70 year reign.  Both the Chairman and President remembered occasions of meeting both the Queen and other members of the Royal Family.  The Book of Condolence was available for members to sign.  This book had previously been displayed at the Town Hall with the co-operation of the Hondón de los Frailes Ayuntamiento.  They had also given permission for the laying of floral tributes in memory of the late Queen.

It was also the 16^th Anniversary for the Branch and a cake in the shape of a poppy was sliced for members.  The Chairman then gave an entertaining talk about his long service in the Police Force in Scotland, recounting many humorous occasions as well as traumatic events.

The Branch is looking forward to several major events in the next couple of months with the annual Poppy Ball, a Golf Day at the beginning of November and the Remembrance Service.

It is with deepest sorrow that the Royal British Legion marks the death of our Sovereign and Patron, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen has served as Patron of the Royal British Legion since 6 February 1952. We are immensely thankful for Her Majesty’s faithful service, and we join the entire Armed Forces community in mourning the loss of its Commander-in-Chief. The Queen’s unwavering dedication to the British Armed Forces will be greatly missed. Our sincere condolences are with the Royal Family at this sad time.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A number of Hondón Valley Branch members took part in a comedy play in the Hondón de los Frailes theatre on two nights at the beginning of July. As part of DIVAs (Drama in the Valley Association) they were delighted to be “treading the boards” again after the problems of the last two years. The play by Derek Webb was called “Agatha Crusty and the Village Hall Murders”. Agatha (played by Barbara Colclough) is a crime novelist and amateur detective . She visits her sister-in-law Alice in the sleepy village of Chortleby and to get some inspiration for her next book. Little did she know that the village was to be rocked by a series of murders as the members of the village hall committee fell one by one to a vengeance seeking murderer.
Britain’s most incompetent detective, D.I. Twigg, (Joe Logan, Branch Chairman) was soon on the scene, confusing himself and everyone else! As well as being humourless, he is anxious to wrap up the case and endeavours to arrest locals on the thinnest of evidence. Agatha has other ideas and cleverly discovers the murderer. The Vicar, Toby Bishop (Marc Meuris) is anxious to protect his parishioners with the help of Eleanor (Pam Jubb) stalwart of the village hall committee. The audience enjoyed the various misunderstands and the rather dubious relationships within the Committee. Both Chris Wyatt (Branch Vice Chairman) and Maureen Hodges (Secretary) played two parts and new member Anna Woodhams played Alice.

Special mention goes to the Director, Steve Kilgallon, (from Pinoso Branch) Producer Julie Cooke and Costume
Designer Anne, who together with a number of others helped bring this comedy play to life, not forgetting the Paper Boy, Len who at the age of 93 is still treading the boards!. Joe Logan said it was a great evening and the audience appreciated the chance of “getting out” again.

Hondón Valley Jubilee Lunch (Hog Roast)

Months of planning had gone into this superb event which was held at Tipsy Terrace, Hondón de los Frailes on 4^th June. With almost 180 members, guests and friends gathered to toast Her Majesty the Queen on the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee.

The day began with the marching in of the Branch Standards accompanied by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums.  They played a number of items including a score written especially for the Jubilee. Diu Regnare (Long to Reign).

With “two hogs”, we tucked into a superb lunch followed by a special Tipsy Terrace Jubilee pudding.  Joe Logan (Branch Chairman) gave an interesting resume of events of the Queen’s 70 year reign.   During the afternoon came a “lucky draw” with 40 superb prizes.  Then came dancing with music from DJ Gabriella.

Event organiser Nigel Hails (Branch Fundraising Officer) commented he was delighted that so many people had supported the lunch, including members from other Branches.   He was later able to reveal that event had raised over 900€ for the Poppy appeal.

Hondón Valley RBL Learns about the Bagpipes - January 2022

The January meeting took on a Scottish Theme in readiness for the Branch Burns’ Night Supper on 25^th January.  Following the more formal part of the meeting, the Chairman, Joe Logan, introduced Tony Dolphin who has played the bagpipes at a number of Branch functions.  Tony, a member of the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, gave an interesting talk on the origins of the pipes, the fact they can be seen in a number of countries of the world, including Spain and the single drone pipe was mentioned as far back as 1000BC in Egypt.  Everyone was surprised when Tony explained the Great Highland Bagpipe had an average volume of around 115 decibels!  Tony concluded by playing the Highland Bagpipes and the more “gentle” Lowland Pipes.

During the quiz at the end of the evening, members were able to sample some delicious Shortbread made by Linda at The Hondón Hub!

The Hondón Valley Branch of the Royal British Legion held its Centenary Poppy Ball at Bellevall Hotel Rural below Ofra, on the outskirts of Aspe on 29^th October.  This event had been eagerly awaited and certainly did not disappoint.

Guests arrived in the beautifully decorated courtyard of the recently built hotel and enjoyed reception drinks and canapés before being piped into dinner by Piper Don Mark.  Chairman Neil Pavitt then welcomed members and guests and thanked everyone for their generosity and continuing support of the Branch and the Legion in this, the Charity’s Centenary Year.   We then all enjoyed a delicious dinner with live entertainment presented by Sunflower Valley  a rock and pop duet.  During the evening the local drama group DIVAs (Drama in the Valley Association) performed some poignant readings.  This culminated in a short “sing song” of War time songs.

Following a “Bumper” Raffle, Neil auctioned a number of limited edition items for the Poppy Appeal.  The final amount raised by the event will be revealed by the Chairman at the Branch meeting later this month.

The Branch Remembrance Service will take place on llth November at the Catholic Church in Hondón de los Frailes and guests are asked to take their seats by 10.40a.m.  Further details about the Branch can be obtained from the secretary on Hondonvalley.secretary@rbl.community.

We are delighted that restrictions are starting to ease and we can meet again.  The first Branch Meeting on 2021 was held at Tipsy Terrace on 18th May.  We welcomed four new members to the Branch.
15th May 2021 was the date when Members of the Royal British Legion all over the world commemorated the 100^th Anniversary of the setting up of the Charity.  The Hondón Valley Branch was no exception.  At the May meeting members recalled memorable events over the past 100 years including the “Honour the Covenant” Campaign and more recently, the addition of an Armed Forces question in the 2021 census.  The Branch also looked forward - to the challenges in the years to come.

Planning of events and meetings is now underway with the opportunity of getting together with friends, some of whom members have not seen for some months.

Tuesday 19th November - Branch AGM

The Branch held its AGM on Tuesday 19^th November, in Hondón de los Frailes.  The President and Chairman both commented on the huge amount of work undertaken by Branch members for the Charity.  Members had also been busy helping the local community who had suffered terrible flooding in September.  The President, Peter Lodge MBE, paid tribute to those helpful members who were still supporting the local community.  A number of well attended events had been held during the year raising vital money for the Poppy Appeal and our veterans.  The Legion’s core role is to support the Armed Forces Community and the Chairman, Neil Pavitt, paid tribute to Sheila the Branch Community Support Officer who had assisted a number of local people during the year. He welcomed the new Branch Vice Chairman, Joe Logan.  Neil would be revealing the total amount raised for the Poppy Appeal during the December meeting.

At the end of the formal part of the meeting a member Dave Sparks talked of (some) of his experiences in the Royal Navy and showed members a beautiful blown glass poppy which would be auctioned for the Poppy Appeal.

The evening ended with a surprise social time.  Members of the local drama group (DIVAS – Drama in the Valley Association) and from Campoverde entertained members.  There were hilarious poems by Pam Ayres from Jill and Chris and this was followed by slightly irreverent Salvation Army hymns from Anna, Helen and Jo.  Then came Barbara with her rendition of that great Stanley Holloway favourite – Albert and the Lion.  The evening ended with a great entrance from a rather over exuberant “Mrs Brown” (Aka Anna) who read a comical “letter to her son” and then discussed her wish to have plastic surgery!  A superb end to the evening with members asking “when can everyone come back again?!!”

Saturday 16th November 2019 - Hondon de los Frailes

Fashion Comes (again) to Hondón de los Frailes

Hondón Linen and Luxury Goods held a Winter Fashion Show last Saturday in the village of Hondón de los Frailes.  Billie, Stella and Pete turned the shop into a superb Fashion Show with a catwalk for the models.  Outfits went from warm winter creations to colourful Christmas fashions.  The six models took to the catwalk to great applause showcasing fashion items from the store.  The event was compered by Dave Sparks who also provided music to get everyone in the mood.

After enjoying the show, followed by cave, nibbles and cakes, there was a draw for the Grand Raffle.  Proceeds from the day were kindly shared with the local Hondón Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion for the Poppy Appeal – thus supporting the many veterans in need here in Spain.  The afternoon is expected to raise in the region of 400€ for the charity.

Billie said it was a great atmosphere and thanked all those who supported them and the Legion on a chilly November afternoon.  Neil Pavitt, Chairman of the Hondón Valley Branch, also paid tribute to everyone who had planned the event and to local people who had come along.  “We are exceedingly grateful to Billie, Stella and Pete for generously supporting our veterans”.

Remembrance Service - llth November 2019

Remembrance Service - 11th November 2019

The Catholic Church in Hondón de los Frailes was full for the Annual Remembrance Service. Father Don Witts officiated and his address was very relevant to Remembrance and the 2 minute silence.

We were honoured to have Elizabeth Bell MBE, Vice Consul from the British Consulate in Alicante attending, along with Sr Eleuterio García, Alcalde of Hondón de los Frailes (who read the lesson in Spanish), Sra Carmen Selles, Alcaldesa of Hondón de las Nieves and Juan de Dios Navarro from the Diputación de Alicante.  Once again the Corro-Parroquial from La Romana sang Spanish hymns including a rendition of “We will Remember Them” especially written and arranged for the Service.  Former Branch President Peter Broadbent told the congregation about his and his wife’s Grandfathers and their involvement in World War I.  A very poignant tribute to them and all those who served their country then and since. 

Following the Service there was a parade led by the Branch Standard and National Flags and Piper Tony Dolphin.  The congregation walked the short distance to the garden of the Ayuntamiento where wreaths, flowers and poppy crosses were laid.

The Hondón Valley Branch would like to thank all those who attended the Service marking this very special day in the Legion calendar. The next meeting of the Branch is on Tuesday 19^th November at the Irish Bar in Hondón de los Frailes 7 p.m. for 7.30 p.m.  We have a great social time planned and welcome anyone who would like to come along.

Poppy Ball - 1st November at Ya Restaurante, Aspe

Annual Poppy Ball.

120 Members and guests arrived at Restaurante Ya in Aspe to find a beautifully decorated Function Room ready for a great evening. The organiser of the event, Carol, named each table after a specific variety of poppy with interesting anecdotes. Each guest was given a packet of poppy seeds to “plant a memory” - a lovely touch.

Musical entertainment was provided by “Elephant and Castle” a local Spanish duo, followed by Rob Sweeney giving his “tribute to Michael Bublé and Friends” where guests showed their dance moves.

There was a “Take your Pick” game followed by a Grand Raffle containing over 45 amazing prizes and the whole evening is expected to raise around 1000€ for the Poppy Appeal and the veterans in Spain.  This was a great evening and a superb fund raising event.

 Summer Party - June 2019

Members and guests enjoyed a Summer party at El Fielato Restaurant at El Partidor (near Abanilla).  The shady surroundings proved ideal in the hot weather and the local area overlooks the Rio Chicamo, a favourite destination for walkers.

At this very popular cave restaurant, we enjoyed and extensive Spanish menu which was followed by entertainment from local singer Rob Sweeney and those who felt more energetic, got up and danced to the extensive selection of music.

June Meeting - Fun and Games Night!

Following the formal part where the Chairman updated members on recent changes to the Legion line up, members settled into an evening of fun and games.

As well as the “normal” darts, table skittles and shove ha’penny (50 cents) there were the more unusual games.  One member, George, correctly guessed the weight of a bottle of whiskey. The “rat down a drain pipe” grew great crowds of participants, as did the “duck shooting gallery” and fairground “grabber” machine.  Rhoda, who “downed” the most ducks in the shooting gallery surprised herself at her fantastic shooting ability, beating some members who thought they were “crack shots”!! Our new venue gave us lots of space to display all the various games.

The next Branch meeting will be 16th July at the Polideportivo Aspe (old Aspe Road) 7 for 7.30 p.m.   A summer party is planned for 18^th July and this will be a great outdoor event for members and guests.

The Branch April Meeting had a real Easter feel about it - with lots of eggs - decorated and chocolate, and a wide variety of beautiful hats.  The competition was fierce but our photo below shows the overall winner Sylvia Stewart and all the other contestants.

THE HONDÓN VALLEY BRANCH IN RECENT DRAMA
 (we thank Peter Broadbent for the following critique)

DIVAs (Drama in the Valley Association), a fledgling Amateur Dramatic Society in the Hondón Valley, recently staged McGillivray & Zerlin’s ‘Murder at Checkmate Manor’. A production that included scripted missed entrances, an undisciplined set, miss-timed sound effects, seemingly off-the-cuff dialogue and uncertain lighting, proved to be an entertaining and adventurous choice for their first production. Thankfully, the support of the Hondón de los Frailes Ayuntamiento and a small, but effective team of support staff, made everything possible.

Seven of those taking part were members of the local Hondón Valley Branch. The brilliant Sandra Ward, as the scripted Chairperson, heralded the start of a production that occasionally reminded me of the fondly remembered ‘Acorn Antiques’. The nine member cast, gainfully played the numerous characters and unexpected costume and character changes added to the confusion and amusement. Richard de Ste Croix’s purposefully troublesome set had a mind of its own, offering an additional degree of uncertainty. 

As a lover of farce, I found the absurdity of the piece, thoroughly entertaining.  All the cast were well rehearsed under Lorraine Latchford and Julie Cooke’s direction. Anna Woodham as Lady Doreen and Barbara Colclough as Pawn kept the gaffe-filled plot moving along nicely. Thankfully Joe Logan, playing Daphne, disguised his masculinity well within a badly tailored tennis skirt: but reinvented himself in the closing scene as an Astronaut wearing a domestic hot water heater as a back pack! Chris Wyatt, playing Inspector O’Reilly with more than a hint of ‘Clouseau’, benefitted from wearing the same costume throughout.  Along with his “sister” Patricia de Ste Croix, Len Simm  had one of the least demanding roles as a wheel-chaired curmudgeon, later playing the family solicitor. Last, but by no means least, Peggy Wyatt, as a Cook in an inflatable suit, was an extraordinary sight.

Jacqueline Logan, the ‘prompter’, unashamedly sitting amongst the audience, was only required once to my knowledge: but I could be wrong ... not knowing if her intervention was necessary or scripted. Judging by the reaction of those sitting around me, everybody enjoyed the performance. I hope that DIVAs continues to entertain us for years to come: particularly those like me, who lack the ambition ... or talent to ‘tread-the-boards’ themselves!

Hondon Valley Branch Commemorates World Forest Day 2019

At the March meeting of the Hondón Valley Branch, members heard from the President, Lt Col Pete Lodge MBE, on a variety of recent events involving Armed Forces personnel and veterans.  He paid tribute to the Forces Wives Challenge raising money for The RBL. The ladies have been in Chile and after undergoing 10 days altitude acclimatisation training, they climbed Ojos del Salado, the highest volcano in the world at 6893 metres above sea level, to raise awareness of loneliness and isolation. He praised their courage and determination.  

Members also heard from Peter Broadbent, a previous Branch President, whose humorous reminiscences revolved around the magazine Campo he started in 2001.  One item that caused much mirth was the following

“Beverley, the 6 year old daughter of friends, was asked where her grandparents lived.   She replied ‘They live at the airport. When we want them, we pick them up. When we’ve finished with them we take them back to the airport.’ “

In March last year, the Branch remembered World Poetry Day and were delighted when a number of members wrote some amazing poems.  This year, however, we commemorated “World Forest Day” and members took part in a quiz testing their knowledge of the rain forest, its inhabitants and flora and fauna.  In April members will be showing their creative skills when they compete for the “best decorated egg” and the Easter Bonnet competition.

 Further information on future events and meetings is available from the Secretary (hondonvalley.secretary@rbl.community)   The Branch meets on the third Tuesday of each month in the Hondón Valley.   New members will be made most welcome and it is not necessary to have an Armed Forces connection in order to join in and take part in any of the Branch events.

Hondon Valley Branch Remembers Robert Burns

When members and guests of the Hondón Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion sat down for their Burns’ Night Supper, little did they know just what a great evening was planned.  The venue was El Nuevo Valle, in Hondón de los Frailes and the MC for the evening was Ronnie Mannall.  The piper, Tony Dolphin, did us proud and got us all in the Scottish spirit.

Ronnie recounted the life of Scotland’s National Poet – Robert Burns and we then celebrated in a way Burns would have approved  – eating, drinking,  music, piping and poetry (and of course, the craic!)  The haggis was piped in by Tony, which  we toasted with a “ wee dram “ of whiskey, before tucking into Scotch broth , Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, steak pie, topping off the meal with Boozy Trifle, coffee and Scottish Butter Tablet.  A number of members took part reading poems and the “Toast to the Lassies” by Joe Logan and “Response” by Carol were particularly entertaining.  Following the meal Carol had prepared a super Scottish Quiz where members grouped into Clans.  Tricky questions but very “educational” – for those Sassenachs among us!  After the various toasts we all linked arms for Auld Lang Syne.  A really enjoyable and memorable evening.

Hondón Valley Branch – Great Pride

The AGM of the Hondón Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion was a well attended evening, with both a new President and Chairman being elected.  The President is Lt Col Peter Lodge MBE and he gave a very interesting and poignant speech on his time in the Army and commended the Legion’s work with those leaving the Armed Forces but suffering from PTSD.  Just one thread of the Legion’s support for its beneficiaries.

The Chairman, Neil Pavitt remarked on an amazing year, commencing with a District Award for Recruiting new members.  In August he and Roger Kingham, as Branch Standard Bearer, attended the GP90 Commemoration Ceremony in Belgium;   and then talked of all the social activities and fund raising events of the year.  Neil paid tribute to the Committee and all the members who had helped support the Branch during the year in so many differing ways.  The Branch members showed their pride by loudly applauding our Standard which now displays the Ypres Scroll – being one of only two Branches in the whole of Spain who attended the event.  The other Branch being our colleagues from Mojacar.

 The Branch Remembrance Service took place on Saturday 10th November at the Catholic Church in the centre of Hondon de los Frailes.  The beautiful Church was full – with standing room only.  Father Don Witts officiated and welcomed Elizabeth Bell MBE, Vice Consul from the British Consulate in Alicante and the congregation to this special service of Remembrance and Commemoration of 100 years since the end of the Great War.  Victor Ramirez Segura, the local European Councillor, read the Lesson in Spanish.  Also taking part was the Spanish choir – Corro-Parroquial Inglesia San-Pedro Apostol de La Romana.  They had written a hymn especially for the Branch – We will Remember Them- and performed it during the Service.

To commemorate the centenary, Branch members read extracts from “Forgotten Voices of the Great War” covering each of the four years until the time the Armistice was announced.  These were very emotional and often harrowing accounts of life in the trenches at that time.  (These readings will be displayed on the Branch website)

At the end of the Service, Father Witts blessed the Branch Standard – recognising the new Ypres Scroll following attendance at the Great Pilgrimage 90 in Belgium in August this year.  Hondón Valley Branch was one of only two Branches from the whole of Spain who attended this event and Branch members are very proud that their Standard was one of over one thousand Standards from all over the world.

The Branch Standard and National Flags, together with Piper, Tony Dolphin then led the parade from the Church to the Ayuntamiento garden where wreaths and Memorial crosses were laid.

The Royal British Legion Remembrance Service on Saturday 10th November will take place at the Catholic Church in the pedestrian area in Hondón de los Frailes.  (We ask that the congregation take their seats by 10.40 a.m.)  This year of course we commemorate 100 years since the end of WW1 and we are planning to include in the Service readings from the trenches;  especially poignant will be reminisces of the moment the Armistice was announced.  Following the service there will be a parade the short distance to the garden of the Ayuntamiento where members, guests and visitors are welcome to lay small crosses of Remembrance in the area provided. (Crosses will be available on the day)

Hondón Valley Legion – Changes at the top - September

Last week was the first Branch meeting following the summer break.  It saw the change of Chairman as Ian and his wife at moving to another area.  Neil Pavitt has now taken over as Chairman (pro tem) and thanked Ian for all the work undertaken over his chairmanship. 

Neil then gave the Branch a humorous - and often moving – account of his attendance in August at the Great Pilgrimage in Belgium, along with Branch Standard Bearer Roger Kingham.  They joined thousands of Armed Forces veterans and supporters from across the UK and worldwide in a pilgrimage of remembrance to some of WW1’s most poignant sites.     The three day event saw the 2,200 participants visit the WW1 trenches, battlefields and cemeteries of France and Belgium.  A very moving experience.

The recreating of the historic pilgrimage of 1928 was the Legion’s biggest membership event in modern history and was a suitable tribute from the members of The Royal British Legion in honour of the First World War generation, echoing the way the British Legion community commemorated the 10^th anniversary of the conflict in 1928.

The meeting ended with the Parading of the Branch Standard resplendent in its new “Ypres 2018” scroll, which was in recognition of the Hondon Valley Branch taking part. Neil then thanked Branch members for their support.

 HONDÓN VALLEY BRANCH LEGION MEMBERS HONOUR WW1 GENERATION BY RECREATING HISTORIC PILGRIMAGE OF 1928

More than 2,200 standard bearers and wreath layers paid tribute to the fallen.

Members of the Hondón Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion joined thousands of Armed Forces veterans and supporters from across the UK and worldwide in a pilgrimage of remembrance to some of WW1’s most poignant sites.

A spectacular two-mile march through Ypres to the Commonwealth War Grave Commission’s Menin Gate Memorial, led by 1,100 Standard Bearers, was the culmination of the three day event which saw the 2,200 participants visit the WW1 trenches, battlefields and cemeteries of France and Belgium.

Roger Kingham and Neil Pavitt attended the Great Pilgrimage 90 as representatives of Hondón Valley Branch, as a Standard Bearer and wreath layer respectively.

Mr Neil Pavitt, Parade Marshal District North Spain, a member of the Hondón Valley Branch said “Being part of such an historic event and representing my Branch in commemorating those that lost their lives in the First World War, was an honour and something I will never forget.”

The Branch Chairman, Ian McNeil said “The Branch members are extremely proud that Neil and Roger represented the Hondon Valley Branch in this event, recreating the Great Pilgrimage of 1928 and were also able to visit various cemeteries, museums and trenches.”

The Hondón Valley Branch held its Summer Party at Tipsy Terrace in Hondón de los Frailes on 15^th June.  This year it was in the form of a “Hog Roast”.  The hog weighed in at 80 kilos which meant there were “seconds” and even “thirds” for some!  Thanks goes to Jo, Steve and their team for their support.

Over 100 members, friends and guests enjoyed the afternoon.  Following the meal there was entertainment from the very “energetic” and extremely talented singer Suzie G.  The heat of the day did not seem to affect her exuberance as she encouraged guests to sing along with favourite songs and then dance to the “infectious music”  - including ABBA .

During the afternoon guests could “name the Teddy Bear” – the winning name being Nibbles!  as well as two auctions and lucky number draws.  The afternoon raised in excess of 600€ which was a great sum for Legion funds.

The May meeting of the Hondón Valley Branch saw us wishing we had a larger venue.  It was the return, by popular request, of Neil’s Magnificent Auctions.  Neil said he was amazed at the number of good quality items donated by members and friends.  At the end of the evening, Neil and his helpers, found they had raised over 350€ with half going to the Poppy Appeal and the remainder towards the cost for two Branch members to attend in August the re enactment of the Great Pilgrimage (90 years on).  With new members joining on the evening plus a full house of regulars, it was once again a fun evening.

Ian McNeil – Chairman – said “It was a lot of hard work by Neil and his “helpers” and I would like to thank them and I really appreciate the support of our members and friends in raising such a large amount in a couple of hours.

The April meeting of the Hondón Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion saw the Chairman Ian McNeil presenting certificates to our Branch Poets Extraordinaire.  The poems are now displayed on this website.  The social time included a quiz of anagrams of Beatles Songs, with much mirth as the answers were “sung” by members!  There then followed the Human Fruit Machine where members tried their luck at “three fruits in a row”.  By the end of the evening some of the fruits – particularly the bananas – were inedible!  A great fun evening raising monies for the Poppy Appeal.

The Hondon Valley Branch is presented with the prestigious Recruiting and Retention Award.

At the District North Spain Conference on 26th January 2018,  Recruiting and Retention Award for 2017 was presented to the Branch Chairman, Ian McNeil.  This Award recognises an increased membership and retention measures over the previous three years.

Ian said he was very surprised and delighted and paid tribute to all the hard work by his Committee members since the Branch was inaugurated 11 years ago.

CELEBRATING BURN’S NIGHT

40 Members and Guests celebrated Burn’s Night at El Nuevo Valle, Hondón de los Frailes in grand style.  Tony, the Piper did us proud and got us all in the Scottish spirit, with some members even trying out their (bad) Scottish accents!

Our MC for the evening Ronnie Mannell, told us of the life of Scotland’s National Poet – Robert Burns  and we then celebrated in a way that Burns would have approved of  – eating, drinking,  music, piping and poetry! (and of course chatting) The haggis was piped in by Tony, which  we toasted with a “ wee dram “ of whiskey, before tucking into Neeps and Tatties, steak pie, and finally topping off the meal with Tipsy Laird Trifle.

There followed a number of poems and the evening will also be remembered for Neil Pavitt’s poem “There’s a Moose Loose about the Hooooose”! The evening finished with a rendition of one of Burn’s famous songs Auld Lang Syne and fitting tribute to a great evening.

Branch AGM and Awards

The recent Branch AGM was far from a “stodgy” affair.  The Chairman Ian McNeil welcomed the recent past President Peter Broadbent and his wife.  After ten active years, Peter was standing down as President and the role was now undertaken by Dave Stewart.  To Peter’s surprise and delight, he was presented with a Poppy Pin made from British brass artillery fuses found on the battle sites at Passchendaele.  His wife Margaret was given a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

Ian McNeil said he was delighted to recognise the tremendous work for the Branch and the Legion given by the members.  Firstly he presented four Branch Awards – for service over and above that expected of a member – to Neil and Lucy Pavitt and Hazel and Dudley Rice.  Then came the Poppy Awards.  These were presented to Neil and Lucy Pavitt, both for five years service and Dave Sparks for ten years service to the Poppy Appeal.  All these awards received great applause and not a few tears from the members present.

The meeting finished with a fun event put on by Pam Edwards who now covers social activities for the Branch.

The Committee are planning an extensive social programme for 2018 and anyone interested in coming along to any meetings or events is more than welcome- you do not need an Armed Forces background to be a member of a Legion Branch. Normal meetings (except December) are held at the Polideportivo Restaurant in Hondón de las Nieves the third Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m. for 7.30 p.m.
